The New Jersey Family Leave Act (NJFLA) entitles eligible employees to take unpaid, job-protected leave for certain family and medical reasons. The NJFLA applies to employers with at least 30 employees. Employees are eligible for NJFLA leave if they have worked for their employer for at least 12 months and have worked at least 1,000 hours during the 12 months preceding the leave.
To apply for NJFLA leave, employees must provide their employer with written notice of their intent to take leave at least 30 days before the leave is to begin. The notice must include the reason for the leave, the expected start and end dates of the leave, and a statement that the employee intends to return to work at the end of the leave period. Employers may request medical certification to support the need for leave.
